Helmet

We went to WalMart to buy some elastic and to kill time before the puppet show at the library. They didn't have any good elastic, only the stuff that fails quickly under strenuous diaper use, so we just moved on and started to wander the store. We headed over to the toy section to buy Leo a MatchBox car. On the way, I spotted a good sale on bike helmets, toddler sized. So I offered him a choice and he picked the red-hot flame helmet, very excited (he loves accessories). It was a good deal: $7 from $18. We bought the little car and went to the puppet show.

He LOVED the puppet show. It was a very good time and there were lots of kids, singing and laughing. We will be sure to try to go to more story hours at the library.

A few days later, we were at a party at our friends' house with many toddlers. The evening was a lot of fun, lots of chaos and toddler tussles. During one shoving match, Leo got knocked over into the corner of an end table. There was a loud and sickening thump and Leo fell on the floor crying. I picked him up and held him, shushing and calming him and removed his helmet. He was not hurt, just scared, but his helmet had two large divets in the brain stem protection foam. He wore that helmet all evening, and of all the kids, he was the one to have an accident. I don't know how much protection the helmet gave him, but it was truly a fortunate blessing he was wearing it.
